Nandita Vijaykumar
Assistant Professor (Computer Science), University of Toronto
Faculty Member, Vector Institute
I am an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Toronto and the Department of Computer and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough. I am currently a Research Scholar at Amazon. I am a faculty member at the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence, the Acceleration Consortium, and the Robotics Institute. I lead the embARC Research Group.
I received my Ph.D. and M.S. in 2020 from Carnegie Mellon University where I was advised by Prof. Onur Mutlu and Prof. Phil Gibbons. I was fortunate to also work with the Systems Group in the Computer Science Department at ETH Zurich during my PhD. In the past, I have worked for AMD, Intel, Microsoft, and Nvidia.
Group Openings:
We have an opening for a post-doctoral researcher -- please send me an email if you are interested in the topics below.
We are always looking for great PhD students. Please directly apply to the CS department at UofT.
I typically only take undergraduate interns from UofT. Please email me with your CV and transcripts!
My group's research explores the intersection of computer systems/architecture with visual computing, including computer vision, robotics, and machine learning. I am particularly interested in building efficient, scalable, and secure systems that enable machines to perceive, interpret, and interact with the physical world.
We take a cross-stack approach—spanning algorithms, compilers, runtimes, and hardware—for applications such as 3D reconstruction, differentiable rendering, perception, and multi-modal generative models (including VLAs, diffusion models, and video generation). We explore both, the data-driven approaches transforming visual computing, and the systems foundations required to make them practical. Beyond speed, cost, and scalability, an important aspect is enabling efficient systems and hardware support for privacy and confidentiality in these AI systems.
Our research has been supported by industry and academic partners including Intel, AMD, Amazon, LG, Sony, Rebellions AI, NSERC, MITACS, CentML, and CSE Canada.
You can read more about my group's research here.
I help run the Systems@UofT Seminar Series. Send me an email if you would like to give a talk!
I also help organize VisArch: A Workshop on Systems and Architectures for Neural Rendering, AR/VR, and Visual Computing. Recent editions were at ISCA 2026 and ASPLOS 2026.
